Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walto
For those who don’t know a lot about me, I am a native of Western North Carolina. I currently am a resident of Asheville, NC and continually visit my home in Marion,NC. Food has always been an important aspect of my life. I was raised to appreciate and value every meal that was on the table and to be cautious of what was going into my body. This passion of food transformed into documenting amazing experiences shared at the dinner table in Western NC.
If you are from North Carolina or even the South in general, you know about the importance of crispy, juicy, pulled-pork BBQ. As a child, I remember sitting on my back porch by the smoker. Smelling the charcoal and pork fragrant air, I knew I would have a full stomach of barbecue that would put me to sleep easily that night . Even the dogs, my Border Collie puppy, Gipper, and three-legged Feist, Lucy, joined me to sit near the smoker and enjoy the aroma dancing through the humid, Summer air.
The on-going debate in North Carolina all comes down to the SAUCE. Eastern NC sauce usually contains vinegar, sugar, and red pepper (there are plenty of variations ). Western NC/ Lexington BBQ sauce is also made with vinegar but includes a tomato or ketchup component in it and tend to be sweeter. Everyone thinks that their sauce is the best and it is a debate any North Carolinian will fight over!
I enjoy Eastern sauce, personally. I like the tang of the vinegar and the kick of peppercorn and red pepper flakes. But I also appreciate any variety. When looking for delicious barbecue in Asheville, I was recommended a variety of restaurants that included:Luella’s Bar-B-Que , Buxton Hall BBQ, Moe’s Original Bar B Que, and much more.
The picture below is from Luella’s Bar-B-Que. I visited Luella’s around a year ago and fell in love. There are two locations in Asheville. One location is on Merrimon Ave. and the other is in Biltmore Park in South Asheville.
Luella’s has been open since 2007. Luella’s is named after the grandmother of the owner, Jeff Miller. Grandma Lue handed down her recipes, traditions, and techniques. Now, Luella’s is a booming business that supports the local community, the arts and sciences, and local organizations.
Isn’t that amazing!!
My experience at Luella’s was wonderful. The food was delicious and the service was quick. Off of the large menu, Aaron and I ordered:
Chopped Brisket, Bacon, Hoop Cheddar Sauce, Lue’s Pickled Jalapeño & BBQ Rub.
Entrées: ( we ordered the Chopped Pork Barbecue, Smoked Turkey, Chile Rubbed Beef Brisket, Pulled Chicken, and the Sausage)
Comes with two sides and three hush puppies
Two Meat Combo: Comes with two sides and three hush puppies
Overall, I would 10/10 go back again. If I had to rate the experience I would rate it 9/10 just because we were located in a crowded spot by the door. Luella’s is also family friendly and won’t take too much out of your wallet. $$
Till next time,
Yee-Haw
